Gardening

For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen on what to do in the garden this week:

Sow seeds for winter flowering sweet peas if you want their blooms by New Year’s Day.

Choose tulips, daffodils, crocus and other bulbs for planting next month. Chill tulips in the refrigerator for at least 30 days before planting them.

Precondition soil with organic matter before planting vegetables, flowers or bulbs this fall.

Plant cool season vegetables: broccoli, spinach, cauliflower and cabbage. Also plant onion sets, garden peas, garlic, carrots and beets.

Feed roses and water deeply for beautiful autumn blooms.
