At 41 years 14 days old, Winfield became the oldest player to play in a World Series since Joe Niekro pitched for the Minnesota Twins in the 1987 World Series at 43. Winfield, on Saturday, became the oldest player to start a Series game since Pete Rose, who was 42 years 6 months old on Oct. 16, 1983, and the fourth-oldest outfielder ever to start a game, behind Rose (42 in 1983), Willie Mays (42 in 1973) and Enos Slaughter (42 in 1958 and 41 in 1957).
By beating out a grounder to third in the second inning Saturday, Winfield matched his hit total in his first World Series appearance. Winfield was one-for-22 against the Dodgers in 1981.
