Americans gave more money to the United Jewish Appeal last year than to any other nonprofit organization, mainly to help Russian Jews emigrate to Israel, according to a newly released survey. The Jewish charity replaced the Salvation Army at the top of the Philanthropy 400, an annual ranking of nonprofit groups by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Donations to major charities rose 5.8% in the past year, keeping ahead of the inflation rate, said the trade newspaper.
