You made my day with “Postscript to the Personal Letter.” Not only is the piece appropriate to our times, but I hope it inspires many to add personal postscripts to their holiday greetings.
In the last analysis, isn’t it the personal touch that matters, whether to combat the threat of mechanization prevalent in our civilization or the social alienation that brings havoc to personal relationships?
Moreover, letter writing is finally receiving recognition as a special genre, supplementing essays and criticisms with human angles.
According to Professor John Livingstone Lowes of Harvard, a true appreciation of a writer’s work can only be accomplished by reading letters, which would reveal the author’s innermost thoughts as well as the tempo of the times.
