Duarte : Van Doren Elected Mayor

The City Council on Tuesday elected Councilman John C. Van Doren to a one-year term as mayor.
Van Doren, a 20-year resident of Duarte, has been a council member since 1978. The account executive for AT&T; was also mayor in 1986 and 1987.
He sees cooperative leadership as the strongest skill he brings to the post. “My job will be to govern the meetings, not to dictate the direction the council wants to go,” he said. “I am privileged to be the one they’ve asked to serve.”
Outgoing Mayor Ginny Joyce said she nominated Van Doren because “he can keep the team together. John has the experience and support of the council, and the willingness to serve.”
Councilwoman Margaret E. Finlay was elected to a one-year term as mayor pro tem.
