NOTEBOOK : Nine Area Football Teams Resume Action Friday in Southern Section Playoffs

The Southern Section football playoffs continue Friday with nine area teams competing for championships.

Bishop Amat (11-0) seeking its first title since 1971, travels to Long Beach Wilson (7-3-1) for a Division I quarterfinal.

Muir (10-1) plays host to Servite (9-1-1) in a Division II quarterfinal at Pasadena City College.

Baldwin Park and Nogales remain alive in Division III. Baldwin Park (10-0-1) travels to Camarillo (8-3) and Nogales (9-2) plays host to San Marcos (9-2).

In Division VI quarterfinals: Charter Oak (11-0) travels to Valencia (8-3); Arroyo (10-1) plays Whittier (10-1) at California High; Rosemead (6-4) plays host to Santa Fe (9-2) and Duarte (10-0) travels to play Anaheim (9-2) at Glover Stadium.

San Marino (8-2) plays Laguna Hills (9-2) in a Division VIII quarterfinal at Mission Viejo High.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s volleyball team, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, will play host to the Southwest Regional playoff tournament beginning Friday.

Pomona (26-6), under Coach Rosie Wegrich, has a bye into the regional final Saturday. The Broncos will play the winner of Friday night’s match between UC Riverside (15-18) and Cal State Los Angeles (22-9).

The winner of the regional advances to the NCAA Elite Eight tournament at a site to be determined.

Pomona, led by senior outside hitter Mitsue Yomoyasu and senior middle blocker Tami Chick, split two matches against Riverside this season. The Broncos won only one of four matches against Cal State L.A.

The Cal State Los Angeles women’s cross-country team placed ninth and the Cal Poly Pomona men finished 13th at the Division II championships Saturday in Slippery Rock, Pa.

Louise Ronnerman, who competed at Mt. San Antonio College and is now attending North Dakota State, and Cal State L.A.’s Marisol Cossio finished 14th and 19th, respectively, in the women’s race to earn All-American honors.

Monique Smith and Angel Martinez helped the Mt. San Antonio College cross-country teams to first- and second-place finishes at the state community college championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Smith placed seventh in the women’s 5,000-meter race in 18:39 as the Mounties totaled 108 points to defeat runner-up Irvine Valley by four points.

Martinez was second in the men’s four-mile race in 19:40, but Mt. SAC was edged, 67-72, by El Camino for the team title.

Anthony Calvillo, a former standout quarterback at La Puente High and Mt. San Antonio College, had an impressive season for Utah State, which concluded its season with a 38-35 victory over Pacific on Saturday.

Calvillo, a junior, ranked second in the Big West Conference, completing 201 of 360 passes (59%) for 2,494 yards and 16 touchdowns. Nine of Calvillo’s passes were intercepted, but only five in his last 317 attempts.

Utah State finished 5-6 and 4-2 in the Big West.

The Maranatha High cross-country teams will compete in the Division IV race at the state championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. The girls won their seventh-consecutive small schools title and the boys won their third at the Southern Section finals at Mt. SAC on Saturday.

The Bishop Amat girls and the San Marino boys also qualified for the state meet in Divisions II and III. Claremont’s Walter Christensen and South Hills’ Steve Monje qualified as individuals in Divisions II and III.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team opened the season with consecutive victories to win the Bronco Invitational tournament.

Pomona defeated Southern Colorado, 81-71, in the semifinals, and then beat Biola, 71-61, for the title.

Pomona center Mildred Conston was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player after she scored 20 points against Southern Colorado and 22 against Biola.
