Closure for Nuclear Plant Is Permanent

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Trojan nuclear plant was shut down permanently Monday, three years ahead of schedule, because of the high cost involved in correcting safety problems, the plant’s owner said.
The plant, on the Columbia River about 40 miles northwest of Portland, has been closed since Nov. 9 after a cracked steam generator tube led to the release of two radioactive gases--krypton and xenon--into the atmosphere.
The board of directors of Portland General Electric Co., the plant’s operator, voted unanimously Monday not to reopen the plant. About 700 of the plant’s 1,300 workers will be laid off.
