Whirlpool Calls Back Laid-Off Workers: Whirlpool Corp. has called back 292 employees furloughed last fall and plans to recall nearly 400 more as its chief refrigerator factory in Evansville, Ind., gears up for another peak production season. The company laid off the 689 workers in October and November with plans to recall them this year, plant spokeswoman Deborah Castrale said. The workers who report back to work this week will work on a line that was shut down and upgraded to begin production of a new model.
