San Antonio Paper Shutdown May Be Near: The San Antonio Light is expected to be closed this week when Hearst Corp., its owner since the 1920s, shuts down the newspaper and takes control of the cross-town rival Express-News, employees say. “People have geared themselves for the end,” said Rick Casey, a Light columnist. More than 600 employees at the newspaper have been waiting for it to close since Hearst officials announced Oct. 6 that the publisher would buy the Express-News from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. for $185 million. Although the sale deadline was extended to Jan. 12 at the request of the Department of Justice, many Light staff members believe the newspaper will publish its last edition Tuesday.
