Math Teacher Funded by Science Foundation

Betty M. Tang, visiting assistant professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, has received a $79,772 National Science Foundation Visiting Professorship for Women grant.

Tang, an assistant professor of mathematics at Arizona State University, is at the Claremont college until January, 1994.

She will teach differential equations, organize a seminar for women mathematicians and perform research on cell growth.

Tang graduated from Kirkland College and earned her Ph.D at USC. She has taught at Wake Forest and Emory universities.

School District Elects New President, Clerk

In its annual reorganization, the Mountain View School District board of education has elected Edwin Wallach president and Joe Moreno clerk.

The district serves part of El Monte.

High School Senior Wins Essay Contest

Rafael Castro, a senior at Rosemead High School, was awarded first place in the New York Stock Exchange “Invest in Yourself” essay competition.

He was among 17 individuals and four corporations recognized by the New York Stock Exchange and Rebuild LA for their outstanding efforts to begin the economic and community rebuilding process.

Castro received a trip to New York City to visit the New York Stock Exchange.

Student Will Attend Inaugural Conference

Alexa Anne Oberpriller, a junior at Bishop Amat High School in La Puente, will attend the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council in Washington from today to Thursday.

Participants were selected by their high school principals based on demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and citizenship.

They will meet with members of Congress, executive officials, historians and journalists to gain a deeper understanding of the history, tradition and significance of the U.S. electoral process and the Inauguration.

La Canada Teacher Honored by Students

Biology teacher Patty Compeau of La Canada High School will be honored for her work in science and mathematics education during Harvey Mudd College’s Teacher Recognition Program, Jan. 23-25. Compeau is among 19 teachers from across the country nominated by college freshmen as instructors who most inspired them and encouraged them to continue their educations.

Compeau and the other honorees will receive plaques and spend time with Harvey Mudd College faculty and students in workshops, classrooms and laboratories. Harvey Mudd College is an undergraduate coeducational institution of engineering, science and mathematics in Claremont.
