The Chatsworth High girls’ soccer team has talked of a “five-peat” all season, and the Chancellors shoot for their fifth consecutive City Section championship at 2 p.m. today when they play Grant at Birmingham High.
Monroe will face Fremont in the boys’ title match immediately after the girls’ match.
Chatsworth (9-0) and Grant (14-0-1) have steamrollered the competition. The Chancellors have won every City title since girls’ soccer began in 1988.
“The trophy only has Chatsworth’s name on it, and we’re going to keep it that way,” Coach Jack Sidwell said.
The Chancellors are led by senior forward Mary Oades, who has 23 goals, eight in the first two playoff games. Other top scorers are Becky Andrews (11 goals), Erin Barry (11 goals) and Sherri McKnight (10 goals).
Grant is paced by three sophomores: Nicole Bucciarelli (37 goals), Jamie Jacobs (28) and Jamie Mond (17). Goalie Kristin Kiley-Boynton bolsters a defense that has allowed only two goals.
In the boys’ match, Valley Pac-8 Conference champion Monroe (12-1) advanced to the championship by edging San Pedro, 1-0 (4-3 on penalty kicks) in its semifinal. Goalie Misael Viramontes had 17 saves and converted the decisive penalty shot.
Nicholas Duran and Santiago Lugo have six goals each; Wilson Lopez has five.
Monroe’s defense, anchored by Eduardo Silva, Jason Terena, Jorge Delgado and Rafael Jaramillo, has allowed one goal in three playoff matches.
Fremont (11-1) is led by forward Cesar Villalobos.
