Vintage Photos: Charles Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow and James Dean are among the subjects depicted in “Artifice and Illusion: Photographs From the Gift of Sid and Diana Avery,” an exhibit opening tonight at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The exhibition celebrates noted photographer Avery’s donation to the academy of 150,000 vintage photographs, estimated to be worth $6 million to $10 million. The display features many unknown photographers because Avery chose to show “other photographers whose work has been overlooked but has been incredible,” rather than his own.
