Rafael Ruelas to Face Veteran Ramirez in Lightweight Bout at Country Club

Rafael Ruelas of Arleta, the World Boxing Council’s No. 1-ranked lightweight contender, will fight veteran Jorge Cocas Ramirez of Mexico City on Feb. 23 at the Reseda Country Club.

Ruelas (34-1, 27 knockouts) will be defending the North American Boxing Federation title he won in November when he stopped Jorge Paez of Mexicali at the Forum.

Ramirez (61-9-3, 51 knockouts) was the WBC’s No. 1-ranked junior lightweight contender in 1991.

Linebacker Arnie Madrid, a former San Pedro High football standout, signed a national letter of intent with Cal State Northridge. Madrid, who has enrolled in classes, is the 10th junior college player Coach Bob Burt has signed in the past six weeks.

A 6-foot-2, 230-pound transfer from Oregon State, Madrid will have freshman status at CSUN because he did not play in a game at Oregon State. Safety Doug Cunningham transferred to Northridge from Oregon State earlier under similar circumstances.

The Kennedy High baseball team will play its annual alumni game at 11 a.m. Feb. 14 at the school.
