Economy Not Overheated, Official Says: A top economic official said China’s economy is not overheated, but acknowledged that there are troubling signs that it is growing too fast. Gan Ziyu, deputy director of the State Planning Commission, said fears that China will again experience the high inflation of the late 1980s are unfounded. He told reporters that the key to preventing an overheated economy is administrative fine-tuning through credit, loans and money supply, all of which would see “an appropriate increase.” The inflation rate in the late 1980s was as high as 40%.
