Bulk Mail to Sport More ZIP Soon

WASHINGTON — Bulk mailers must start using an 11-digit ZIP code by March 21 or lose the discount available to businesses and organizations.
The Postal Service notified customers this week that they would have to change their bar codes, adding two digits to the current nine, to continue receiving discounts of up to 1.5 cents per piece of mail.
The change, which has been in the works for four years, will allow machines to sort mail down to the delivery point on a letter carrier’s route--saving each carrier about two hours a day.
Postal officials said they expected most large mailers to comply quickly.
