Long Beach : City Finds More Contracts Won by Women, Minorities

Long Beach has increased the amount of work it contracts out to businesses owned by minorities and women, nearly meeting goals established by the City Council in 1988, according to a recently released report.
The semiannual report on the city’s Disadvantaged, Minority, and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Program covered July 1 to Dec. 31, 1992.
Under the program, the city set a goal of awarding minority-owned businesses 10% of contracts in several categories: construction; professional services; materials and services, and leases and concessions. It also seeks to award 3% to 5% of contracts in those same categories to women-owned businesses.
Minority-owned businesses were awarded 9.37% of $35.83 million in contracts during the six-month period, according to the report. Businesses owned by women won 8.37% of the contracts.
During the previous 12-month period, minority-owned businesses received 4.59% of the contracts, while businesses owned by women won 3.65%, the report said.
