Suspect in Evers Slaying Is Taken to Hospital

JACKSON, Miss. — A self-proclaimed white supremacist who is awaiting a third trial in the 1963 slaying of civil rights activist Medgar Evers is hospitalized for an undisclosed ailment.
Byron De La Beckwith, 72, was taken to the Veterans Administration Medical Center on Wednesday, a hospital official confirmed.
He would not discuss the nature of Beckwith’s illness, citing patient privacy rules.
