N.Y. Activist Sharpton Begins 45 Days in Jail

NEW YORK — The Rev. Al Sharpton began serving a 45-day jail sentence on Friday, saying he will use the time to shed a few pounds and plan another run for the U.S. Senate.
“I’ll be lean and mean to beat Moynihan next year,” the preacher said of his plans to run against Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan, the incumbent Democrat. Sharpton lost a Democratic primary bid to oppose incumbent Republican Alfonse M. D’Amato last year.
He was sentenced Friday for leading an unruly demonstration that blocked rush-hour traffic on Dec. 21, 1987, as a crowd protested the killing of a black man by a white gang in the city’s borough of Queens.
