Ratleff capped a sensational senior season by leading the Panthers to the Southern Section Division I-AA title. Ratleff had 20 points in a 69-58 victory over Capistrano Valley in the semifinals. He scored 29 more in the 61-59 championship win over Simi Valley. With a second remaining in the second overtime, he banked in a shot to win the game.
Other top prep performers:
Brett Darnell, a sophomore pitcher for the La Mirada High baseball team, threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 as the Matadores beat Lynwood, 2-0, in the first round of the El Segundo Tournament.
Xavier Howell, a senior at Poly High, set a school record of 22 feet, 12 inches in the long jump and also won the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet 1/2 inch in the Poly Invitational track meet.
