BURBANK : Faulty Roof Delays Opening of Fire Station

A new $1.8-million fire station in Burbank will remain empty for several weeks while a contractor who constructed the building replaces the roof, city officials said.
During the first heavy rains in January, the roof of the station began to leak, causing damage to the carpeting, vinyl wall covering and drywall inside the unoccupied building, said Battalion Chief Gary L. Sutliff of the Burbank Fire Department. Tests revealed that the roof was installed improperly and did not conform to the city’s plans and specifications, Sutliff said.
The contractor, Badger Construction Inc. of Riverside, will pay for the new roof, and city fire service will not be hindered by the construction problems, said Burbank Vice Mayor George Battey.
Officials at Badger Construction said the faulty roof was installed by a subcontractor.
