DIGEST : Highland High’s Koykka Signs to Play Football at Northridge

The Cal State Northridge football team signed Highland High’s Tom Koykka, its first high school signee this season, to a letter of intent for 1993, the program’s initial season at the NCAA Division I-AA level.
Koykka, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound offensive lineman, joins 10 other 1993 Matador signees, all transfers from junior or four-year colleges.
Girls’ Soccer
Jody Riehl of Royal High was named the Marmonte League boys’ soccer offensive most valuable player and his coach, Kevin Corley, was named coach of the year. Jeremy Ross of Thousand Oaks was named defensive MVP.
The Tri-Valley League announced its post-season awards, all of which were monopolized by one school.
The co-defensive MVPs were La Reina’s Alicia Moon and Michelle Nuesca. Teammate Jennifer Brant was named offensive MVP and Joe Laraneta was named Coach of the Year.
Girls’ Basketball
Deanna Nakamura of Monroe High was named to the All-City Section 3-A Division team. The East Valley League player of the year averaged 12.6 points, 12.1 assists and 7.2 steals.
