HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL SOUTHERN REGIONAL ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Routs Hanford, 89-48

Miles Simon scored 18 points and David Drakeford 14 to lead a balanced attack as top-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei routed Hanford, 89-48, in a Southern Regional Division I semifinal at UC Irvine Bren Center on Thursday night.
The Monarchs (33-1) came out flat but were able to regroup after a 37-minute delay because of a clock malfunction. The score was tied, 16-16, when the game was stopped. Mater Dei went on a 25-9 run when play resumed.
Terence Wilborn scored 11 points and Olujimi Mann 10 for the Monarchs, who have won 17 consecutive games.
Hanford (26-2) was the Central Section champion.
Lakewood Artesia 71, Riverside J.W. North 53--Charles O’Bannon had 30 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Pioneers (27-4) to an upset victory in a Division II game at Riverside Community College.
North (31-1) was top-seeded.
The Pioneers held North’s Ed Gray to four-of-25 shooting and 17 points--seven below his average.
South Torrance 54, San Dimas 47--The Spartans (28-3) committed 24 turnovers and struggled until the fourth quarter, when Jimmy Williamson scored 13 of his 25 points in a Division III victory at Torrance.
Williamson added three assists in the fourth quarter and made all six of his free throws in one-and-one situations in the last two minutes.
San Dimas finished 26-5.
Gardena Serra 101, Corcoran 53--The Cavaliers (24-7) continued their impressive offensive output in the playoffs with a Division IV victory at Gardena.
Serra, which defeated San Diego Clairemont, 112-45, in the first round, was led by Arthur Tate, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Akeli Jackson added 15 points and 14 rebounds.
GIRLS
Ventura Buena 60, Crenshaw 52--The Bulldogs (25-3) went on an 11-0 run late in the fourth quarter that lifted them to a Division I victory at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Buena trailed, 48-43, with 3:30 to play. Michelle Giordano, who had game highs of 28 points and 11 rebounds, cut the lead to 48-46 with a three-point play. Amanda Falls added a free throw and layup to put the Bulldogs ahead to stay, 49-48. Crenshaw finished 24-3.
San Diego University City 45, Hacienda Heights Wilson 34--The Centurions (25-5) broke open a close game in the second quarter and went on to upset the second-seeded Wildcats (27-2) at Hacienda Heights.
Jessica Birchler scored 19 points and Jenny Gross added 15 and six assists for University City.
Inglewood Morningside 68, Santee Santana 59--The top-seeded Monarchs (28-2) opened a 13-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a Division III game at Inglewood.
Tina Thompson scored 14 of her 20 points in the first half and also had 19 rebounds for the Monarchs. Cha-Ron Walker added 18 points.
Cathy Bass had 23 for Santana.
Playa del Rey St. Bernard 55, Santa Ynez 39--Kelly Shimabukuro and Marte Alexander scored 10 points each to lead the Vikings (28-4) to a Division IV victory at Playa del Rey.
Kristi Rohr had 12 points for Santa Ynez (27-3).
Costa Mesa 67, San Diego University 45--Olivia DiCamilli scored 36 points to lift the Mustangs (29-4) to their first regional final.
In the Division III game, Costa Mesa trailed, 28-15, with 4:29 to play in the second quarter, but tied the score, 32-32, at halftime on Heather Robinson’s basket at the buzzer.
