Dan Jansen won the 500-meter overall World Cup title despite a loss in a speedskating meet dominated by three-time world champion Gunda Niemann of Germany, who won three World Cup titles at Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Nieman took the 1,500- and 5,000-meter titles a day after winning the 3,000 meters.
China’s Qiaobo Ye took the women’s 500-meter title, edging American Bonnie Blair, the two-time Olympic champion.
Jansen was beaten in the World Cup season’s final 500-meter race by Russian Sergei Klevchenja.
Jansen, of West Allis, Wis., finished the season on top the 500-meter standings with 229 points, followed by Klevchenja at 210.
