Digital Layoffs to Decline: Digital Equipment Corp.’s layoffs in the current quarter will be about half the 6,500 that occurred in the previous quarter, a spokeswoman for the Maynard, Mass.-based company said. A report in the Boston Globe said the nation’s No. 2 computer maker was preparing to announce a large layoff Monday. Spokeswoman Nikki Richardson said most of the layoffs have been occurring throughout the quarter and that “there isn’t going to be a large wave today.” Digital has been laying off employees as part of cost cutting under Robert B. Palmer, who was named president and chief executive Oct. 1 in place of ousted founder Kenneth H. Olsen.
