HARRY PROTEGE: When she was 2 years old, Nguyen-Hong Hoang’s parents fled Vietnam on a military carrier. “I don’t remember it, but my parents’ spirit from then has stayed with me,” she says. She’s making them pretty proud now. A 21-year-old junior at UC Irvine, she was honored Monday as the university’s first winner of the prestigious $30,000 Truman Scholarship. She’ll use it for graduate work in government at Harvard. “Some day I want to run for Congress,” she says. “Maybe I’ll beat Bob Dornan.”
