Young Volunteers Win Unsung Hero Awards

The El Monte-South El Monte Coordinating Council has announced the five winners of its Unsung Hero Awards, a program to honor young people who give of their time and effort on a volunteer basis to make the community a better place to live.
The first-place winner is Marcella Marshal, 17, a senior at El Monte High School. She has participated in fund-raisers for community service clubs, made and sold handicrafts to raise money for Christmas baskets and has volunteered at the Elmcrest Convalescent Home.
The second-place winner is Silvia Gutierrez, 17, a senior at El Monte High School. Although she has cerebral palsy, she has tutored students through the school’s Migrant Education Program.
Her twin sister, Veronica, third-place winner, is also active in the Migrant Education Program. Veronica is also a junior hospital volunteer.
The fourth-place winner is Jennifer McEntire, 17, a senior at Mountain View High School in El Monte. She serves meals to senior citizens through the Lions Club Meals on Wheels program, and helped coordinate a toy drive for needy children.
The fifth-place winner is Rosemary Mendoza, 18, a senior at Arroyo High School in El Monte. She collected items for the homeless and fed the homeless at the Los Angeles Mission.
