Grimes helped lead the Knights to the Southern California Division I championship with three impressive outings. In a 58-42 victory over San Diego Poway, Grimes led all scorers with 28 points. She then scored 13 in a 62-59 semifinal win over Thousand Oaks. Grimes capped the week with nine points as the Knights defeated Ventura Buena, 44-33, to earn a shot at the CIF state title. Lynwood will face San Francisco Balboa at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Oakland Coliseum.
Other top performers:
Tammy Sagert, a senior pitcher for Gahr’s softball team, pitched three complete games, winning two. Sagert threw a four-hit shutout and scored the winning run in a 1-0, 13-inning victory over Lakewood. She shut out Millikan, 1-0, on three hits and hit a sacrifice fly in the last inning to drive in the game’s only run. Sagert then pitched a three-hitter but lost, 1-0, to Huntington Beach.
Jennifer Senteno, a senior pitcher for St. Paul, pitched a no-hitter as St. Paul defeated Whittier Christian, 2-0.
