SANTA ANA — A state association of activities directors has named Hewes Middle School in the Tustin Unified School District as one of three California middle schools with an outstanding student activities program.
The California Assn. of Directors of Activities presented the award during its annual convention last month in Anaheim. The other awardees were Kraemer Junior High School in Placentia and Cope Junior High in Redlands.
Hewes Activity Director Diane Aust also received an award for outstanding contributions to student activities.
The school, at 13232 Hewes Ave. in Santa Ana, has a wide range of student activities, including talent contests, pep rallies, band and choral concerts, science fairs and academic events.
There are also appreciation programs for students, teachers, employees and even for birthday celebrants. The activities are coordinated by the student council, the Leadership Class, the Key Club and other student organizations.
Students are also involved in community projects such as canned food and toy drives.
The California Assn. of Directors of Activities includes student council advisers, directors of student councils and educators who work with student leaders.
