MINNEAPOLIS — Stanford defended its NCAA women’s swimming and diving championship Saturday night, but Florida took a share of the spotlight by ending the meet with an NCAA record.
Florida’s 400-yard freestyle relay team stopped Stanford’s hopes of sweeping five relays, breaking Texas’ American record of 3 minutes 15.69 seconds set in 1989 with a time of 3:14.97.
But Stanford won four events at the University of Minnesota on Saturday, and 13 of 21 events in the three-day competition. Lea Loveless, Jenny Thompson and Janel Jorgensen each won five events.
