New Santa Monica Beach Hotel Named

The partially completed seaside hotel at the foot of Pico Boulevard has been named Shutters on the Beach by its new owners, hoteliers Edward and Thomas Slatkin.
The Slatkins bought the property when investors in what was to be a Hyatt hotel sought bankruptcy protection and halted construction. The hotel is expected to be the only one on the Westside actually on the beach.
After the investors ran out of money, the framework of the hotel sat rusting for about a year, until it was purchased several months ago by the Slatkin brothers, former owners of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The 198-room luxury hotel is expected to open this summer. Its restaurant is named for the hotel’s address, One Pico. Klaus Mennekes, 46, has been named general manager.
