Hearing Planned on Water District Tax

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will conduct a public hearing Tuesday on a proposed $9.58 tax that would be imposed on all Ventura County property that falls within the service area of the Calleguas Municipal Water District.
The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at the Preus-Brandt Forum, Cal Lutheran University, 60 W. Olson Road, Thousand Oaks.
About 345,200 parcels in the county would be affected, said Rob Hallwachs, a Metropolitan Water District spokesman. The Metropolitan Water District currently imposes a $5 levy on lots throughout its service area, which reaches from San Diego to Ventura.
The new levy would raise $50 million for the district, of which $3.3 million would come from Ventura County property owners, Hallwachs said.
Tuesday’s hearing will be the second of five conducted by the district. On May 11, the MWD board will decide whether to adopt the levy, Hallwachs said.
He said the district wants to use the money as a more dependable source of income. Most of its income is from water sales, which fluctuate with the season.
Calleguas, the county’s largest water wholesaler, is considering imposing its own $10 property levy to make up for budget shortfalls.
