Iraq Shipped Oil to Iran, U.S. Says

WASHINGTON — The United States said Monday it has evidence that Iraq has violated U.N. sanctions by shipping an unspecified amount of oil to Iran.
“We can confirm a shipment of oil from Iraq to Iran,” State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. He gave no more details, but the Washington Post has said that intelligence reports indicate the shipment involved dozens of tanker trucks.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations denied the charge and said Tehran remained fully committed to upholding international sanctions against Iraq.
Such shipments are illegal under U.N. resolutions that have maintained a trade embargo against Baghdad since shortly after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August, 1990.
