Blue Chip Stocks Sink

NEW YORK — Blue-chip stocks closed sharply lower Friday, hammered by a huge drop in shares of tobacco companies.
At the closing bell, the Dow Jones industrial average was off a steep 71.06 points at 3,368.38, nailed down by a plunge of 22% in the stock of Philip Morris Cos., a component of the index.
