Ojai to Host Celebration of Indian Culture

A celebration of American Indian heritage will fill Ojai’s Libbey Bowl on Saturday to commemorate the United Nations’ declaration of 1993 as the International Year of Indigenous Peoples’ Rights.

The Second Good Red Day, sponsored by the Rainy Mountain Foundation, offers a lineup of musicians, storytellers, children’s performers and other activities. The 2 p.m. event will feature performances by poet-musician John Trudell, folk singer Floyd Red Crow Westerman, rock group Redbone, comedian Charlie Hill and a special tribute to the late Chumash elder Vincent Tumamait.

A children’s program preceding the concert at 10 a.m. will include traditional games, crafts, a wildlife presentation, storytelling by Elk Thunder and traditional dances by the Pomo Toto Dancers.

Proceeds will benefit the foundation, which, in part, provides funding and assistance to help American Indian tribes establish alternative education programs to preserve their culture and heritage. Advance tickets are $15; tickets at the gate are $18. The children’s program, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is free. Admission to the concert is $15 for children 12 and under.
