Top-seeded Stefan Edberg and fifth-seeded Ivan Lendl were winners Wednesday in the Monte Carlo Open at Monaco.
Edberg survived a first-set scare to defeat Javier Sanchez of Spain, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, in a third-round match. The Swede came back from a 3-0 deficit in the tiebreaker and then breezed through the third set.
Lendl beat Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 7-5, 6-3, and continued his comeback from two injury-troubled seasons. The tournament is being played on clay, Lendl’s favorite surface.
Andrei Medvedev, who also likes clay courts and is the tour’s hottest teen-age player, scored a 6-3, 6-4 victory over ninth-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands.
Medvedev, of Ukraine, has won 13 consecutive matches on clay this year.
The seventh-seeded Medvedev advanced to a quarterfinal meeting with Edberg.
