Anthony Tornetta, 63, co-owner of Wood Memorial winner and probable Kentucky Derby starter Storm Tower, died Saturday night of cancer.
Tornetta chartered a special hospital plane from his winter home in Turnberry Isle, Fla., and flew to New York to see Storm Tower win the Wood on April 17. Tornetta was accompanied by an intensive care nurse.
“He was so sick, and in such severe pain, that only a guy like Tony would have fought so hard to be there,” said Ben Perkins Sr., who helps his son, Ben Jr., train Storm Tower. “But he just loved the races so much.”
