* * 1/2 Caron Wheeler, “Beach of the War Goddess,” EMI. Once the most seductive ingredient in Soul II Soul, Wheeler has the kind of smoky vocals that make you sit up and take notice. While this album is appealing and ambitious, not even a remake of Jimi Hendrix’s “The Wind Cries Mary” makes Wheeler’s decision to leave Soul II Soul seem like the wisest career move.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four (excellent).
