Dave Ravitz singled with two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning Sunday, giving UCLA an 8-7 Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division victory over USC before a record 2,646 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The victory virtually guarantees UCLA an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament. UCLA won two of three games against the Trojans over the weekend, both in extra innings, to improve to 32-20 overall and 15-12 in conference.
The Bruins, in third place behind Arizona State and Arizona, conclude their regular season with a nonconference game against UC Santa Barbara and a three-game series at Stanford.
USC (28-27) finished Pac-10 play 15-15. The Trojans’ postseason fate could be determined by how they fare this week in three games in North Carolina.
The NCAA will announce eight regional sites today. The 48-team tournament field will be announced May 24, with play beginning May 27 and 28.
Cal State Northridge (33-18, 13-11) improved its chances for an at-large tournament berth by winning two of three Western Athletic Conference games against Fresno State. The Matadors conclude the regular season Tuesday against defending national champion Pepperdine.
Pepperdine (40-14, 24-6), which already clinched the West Coast Conference title, won two of three games against Loyola Marymount (23-33, 14-16).
Cal State Long Beach (39-17), the Big West Conference champion, swept three nonconference games against Grand Canyon.
UC Santa Barbara (24-28, 8-13) won two of three Big West games against Nevada.
