Landlord’s Failure to Maintain Units

* Regarding the article “Landlord Gets 90 Days in Jail for Failure to Fix Units” (May 1), in which you covered the situation of Daniel Salceda and his apartment health and safety violations: A thorough examination of the facts would have revealed that Mr. Salceda was caught in a bureaucratic struggle with the city of Santa Ana. One department of the city was telling him that they were going to widen Shelton Street and buy his property for demolition. At the same time, the building and safety department was telling him to repair the property.
Salceda went to the City Council and asked for direction. Shortly thereafter, city staff more than doubled the number of corrections necessary against Salceda’s property.
Your article greatly damages the reputation of an individual and his family who have been solid contributors and members of our community.
