Surfers

The surfer is as much a part of the Southern California seascape as a sea gull or a sunset. The pot-bellied pedestrian wading in the foam may be considered the equivalent of an abandoned tour bus on a racetrack.
I am truly appalled that a Manhattan Beach resident, in this day of tax revolt and freedom initiatives, would suggest legislation to tax and license surfing (letter, July 29)! It is one of the few forms of free expression left in Los Angeles. Should we have to register jogging shoes because of the risk of trampling the homeless on the strand?
Bathtubs are for bathing. Waves are for shredding.
