Bush, Carter Stay the Night at White House

WASHINGTON — Former Presidents George Bush and Jimmy Carter accepted an invitation to spend Monday night at the White House, marking the first time for two ex-Presidents to bunk with their successor.
Communications Director Mark Gearan said Carter and Bush agreed to stay over after attending the White House ceremony where Israel and the PLO signed an agreement on Palestinian self-government. Both planned to join President Clinton for a White House ceremony promoting the North American Free Trade Agreement today.
“It’s our understanding that’s the first time ever that two former Presidents have stayed as guests of the President overnight,” Gearan said.
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter also was staying over. Barbara Bush did not accompany her husband.
Former President Gerald Ford also was expected to be on hand for today’s NAFTA ceremony.
