McDonough played in only two games last season and didn’t catch a pass for the Gauchos. But in the first game this season, he knocked all the zeros off his record. McDonough, from Mission Viejo High School, caught seven passes, including three for touchdowns, as Saddleback beat Santa Monica, 37-7. He and quarterback Mike Fouts combined on scoring passes of 25, 23, and 19 yards in the second half. McDonough, who is only 5 feet 10 and 165 pounds, finished with 112 of the 140 receiving yards Saddleback amassed.
Other notables:
* Mike Haxten of Golden West had 11 tackles, including two sacks and a recovered fumble, as Golden West beat El Camino, 30-23.
* Orange Coast’s Daniel Mathot scored 10 goals in three games as OCC won the San Diego Mesa Invitational.
