Mourners Told to Burn Plastic, Save a Forest

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwanese should stop burning wads of imitation money for the dead, an environment-friendly government official says.
In fact, a credit card will do.
Chinese burn paper money in huge denominations at funerals and religious festivals, believing it will reach their ancestors.
But Hsieh Chin-Ting, head of the Department of Civil Affairs, said Friday, “You can put a credit card in the coffin of a relative so he can spend as much as he desires.
“Or you can write a check to be cashed in the world of ghosts,” he added.
Hsieh said the tons of imitation bank notes burned each year are a waste of natural resources.
