Berillon, Longest Shot in Field, Wins the Pomona Invitational

Berillon, a 6-year-old gelding who ran fourth in $50,000 claiming company about three weeks ago at Del Mar, won the Los Angeles County Fair’s richest race, the $150,000 Pomona Invitational Handicap at Fairplex Park on Sunday.

Berillon, trained by Bobby Frankel and ridden by Adalberto Lopez, had been winless in six starts, five of them this year. Sunday’s victory was the British-bred horse’s first since he won the Hillsdale Handicap at Hollywood Park 10 months ago.

Berillon paid $50.20 to win as the longest price in the eight-horse field, beating Memo, the 7-5 favorite, by 2 1/2 lengths. Berillon covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49 3/5.

Frankel has won with all four of his starters at this meet, which ends today.
