OUTLOOK
Capistrano Valley is one of three league teams with a coach-son combination; Coach Thornton has two sons on the Cougar roster. Senior Todd, an all-league second-team selection, led the county last season in three-point baskets (97), and sophomore Brad is a promising newcomer. Thornton worries about lack of experience on a team whose only league losses were to Mater Dei--an experience he expects will be repeated this season. He lost a lot when Corey Kost, Dave Sedgwick and Eric Seiffert graduated, but Thornton expects Todd Thornton, Bates and Carson to pave the way for a promising bunch that includes Earnest, Brown and D’Aquanni, all potential starters. As in the past, Capistrano Valley hopes to capitalize on its size and quickness. Hot perimeter shooting, especially from three-point range, will be a Cougar trademark, “but our inside game needs to improve,” Thornton said. Still, the Cougars, and everyone else in the league for that matter, will be playing for second, third and on down the line.
