Long Beach Women Defeat Loyola

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team outscored Loyola Marymount, 39-21, in the second half and beat the Lions, 64-57, Saturday night at Gersten Pavilion.
The Lions (1-3) were led by Sheri Brown, who scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds.
Melissa Gower had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the 49ers (1-0).
Loyola will play host to Nevada Las Vegas on Saturday night at 7:05.
Molly Melhlberg of Peninsula finished seventh at the Foot Locker Western Regional Cross-Country championships in Fresno and qualified for Saturday’s national meet in San Diego.
The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s basketball team defeated College of Notre Dame, 71-62, to improve to 4-0.
Junior point guard Carlos Paul led the Toros with 17 points.
Dominguez Hills plays at Point Loma Nazarene on Friday.
The 30th annual El Segundo-Kiwanis boys’ basketball tournament, featuring nine South Bay teams, starts Monday with first-round games.
Among the top players in the 15-team field are Bishop Montgomery point guard Kareem Mutrie, who has signed with the University of San Diego; Mira Costa point guard Shane Willis, who has signed with Hawaii, and 6-foot-11 Alex Lopez of North Hollywood Campbell Hall.

Campbell Hall vs. South Gate, 4:30 p.m.; North Torrance vs. St. Bernard, 6 p.m.; Mary Star vs. Pacific Hills, 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday
Hawthorne vs. Crespi, 3 p.m.; West Torrance vs. Bishop Montgomery, 4:30 p.m.; Glendale Academy vs. Mira Costa, 6 p.m.; Whitney vs. El Segundo, 7:30 p.m.
Leuzinger has first-round bye.
Quarterfinals are at 3, 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Semifinals are at 6 and 7:30 p.m. Friday. Championship game is at 8 p.m. Saturday.
