A Santa Ana tax-return preparer pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return and failing to report $39,000 in income in 1987, federal prosecutors announced Friday.
Lupe Barboza, 52, faces up to three years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine when she is sentenced Feb. 3 in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Barboza and her attorney could not be reached for comment Friday.
Federal prosecutors charged Barboza on Dec. 1 with a single count of filing a false income-tax return. Barboza pleaded guilty and admitted that she had knowingly failed to report $39,000 of income on her and her husband’s 1987 federal income-tax return.
The charge resulted from an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.
