Kazakh Parliament, Legislatures Disband

ALMA-ATA, Kazakhstan — Kazakhstan’s Parliament voted Friday to disband and let President Nursultan Nazarbayev rule the oil-rich Central Asian nation by decree until new elections in March.
The lawmakers also abolished Kazakhstan’s more than 200 regional legislatures, leaving local power in the hands of the president’s appointed regional administrators.
The resolution, which requires Nazarbayev’s signature, allows deputies to keep their salaries and privileges, such as legislative immunity, until a new Parliament is elected March 7.
