The city will hold a dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Cerritos Senior Center, which will provide the city’s growing senior-citizen population with medical, social and financial services as well as a place for residents to socialize.
The $3.5-million center, at 12340 South St., features two lounges surrounded by smaller activity rooms. There is also a rose garden, patio with picnic tables and barbecue area.
In its first week, the center will offer workshops on Medicare, assistance on filing income tax returns, blood pressure screenings and a series of lectures on health care. A health assessment program and a free lunch program will be offered regularly.
Residents over age 55 made up 13.4% of the city’s population in 1990, compared to 7.8% in 1980, according to census data.
