General Magic Signs Up France Telecom: The software consortium that hopes to set the standard for piloting users through multimedia entertainment and information networks got a boost when France Telecom said it would take an undisclosed equity stake in the venture. The French state-owned telephone monopoly is the latest telecommunications giant to back General Magic, based in Mountain View. General Magic is developing software to make it easier to send information over new communications networks and to search for specific information--such as news reports, stock quotes or flight schedules--through mountains of data becoming available on global computer networks.
